Frequently Asked Questions

Program Start
The MS program only has one start date at this time, in the fall of each year. The review committee will begin reviewing applications in late February/early March of each year.

Program duration
The program is one year long. Currently there is not an option to prolong the program beyond one year at a full-time status. Students who attend part-time will complete the program in two years.

No GRE
The program does not require GRE scores for your application. GRE scores make no determination on student admission to the program.

No Thesis for the MS Program
MS program does not have a thesis track. The program is designed to be completed within a 10-month period which does not allow sufficient time for thesis requirements to be completed.

Lab Placement and Research Practicum
The process for lab placement is as follows: students indicate a broad preference for either a cognitive or molecular lab, then list three specific labs of interest as part of their application. Interviews are then conducted for selected candidates to better understand each student’s research skills and interests, to help with matching them to a suitable lab (a process conducted by the Research Practicum Course Director, Dr. Bevan Main). The purpose of the research practicum is to provide students with hands-on experience in neuroscience-based research, equipping them with the skills needed for future career development or employment opportunities.

Does earning the MS degree at Georgetown help students get into Georgetown’s MD or PhD Programs?
While we have had students accepted into Medical School and our PhD program, earning a Master’s degree at Georgetown does not guarantee acceptance into a PhD or MD program.
